What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy can be described as the preservation, enhancement, or restoration of movement and physical function impaired or threatened by disease, injury, or disability.

Common Areas Addressed
in Physical Therapy:

Infants
  • Abnormal positioning due to muscle injury or tightness at birth

  • Head shape asymmetries

Ages Birth to 19
  • Strength and Endurance

  • Range of Motion

  • Toe Walking

  • Custom Foot Orthotics

  • Balance

  • Coordination

  • Functional Mobility (ability to navigate their environment including stairs, curbs, etc.)

  • Pain

  • Motor Planning (the ability to conceive, plan, and carry out movements)

  • Movement Patterns (squatting, reaching overhead, etc.)

  • Muscle Tone

  • Posture

Physical therapy addresses many different areas of function; this is not an all-inclusive list.

  • Cerebral Palsy

  • Muscular Dystrophy

  • Torticollis/Plagiocephaly   

  • Gait Abnormalities

  • Sport-related injuries

  • Genetic syndromes/conditions
